Cuyaebeno Reserve

Cuyabeno Reserve

The Wildlife Reserve Cuyabeno is an important natural reserve in the Amazon with quite unusual ecological characteristics. Located in the striations of the Andes, is different from any other jungle in the world, inside we can find Lakes and streams flooded being rare since being still near the Andes should be drained completely. The area has great biodiversity, but possibly a little lower than the better drained protected areas, such as the neighboring Yasuni National Park , which is considered the most diverse park in the world. The quebeno is also characterized as the home of the Pink Dolphin , common in the Amazon but exclusive in certain areas. The Reserve is also home to the Hoatzin or eagle of the region, with its eight-foot wing opening.

The Cuyabeno has more than 550 different species of birds: 60 species of orchids; more than 350 species of fish; a great variety of reptiles such as anacondas, caimans and river turtles. An estimated 12,000 plant species found within the reserve. And many species of mammals, including the incredible Tapir Since the Cuyabeno Reserve belongs to the National System of Protected Areas, very few Tourism Operators are qualified to work in this area. This is one reason why there are not many tourists visiting the area, so you can enjoy nature and its magnificent sounds. There are six main ecosystems in Cuyabeno: (1) seasonally flooded forests or swamps traversed by blackwater rivers with vegetation dominated by a species of palm. (2) forests flooded by rivers rich in sediment , or várzea colored "café con leche" (example: Río Aguirico), (3) forests flooded by blackwater rivers or igapó; (4) Permanent lakes that rarely enter dry, such as Zancudo Coche along the Aguarico River, well drained forest is found in small hills and in the upper basin, particularly upstream from the entrance of the park in "the Cuayabeno bridge"; dark sediment of the poor rivers, (5) "Coffee-with = milk" being the largest Rio Aguarico ; (6) Semi-permanent lakes - the largest Laguna Cuyabeno - which most of the years fall dry and is dominated by the famous Macrolobium trees that are the home to innumerable epiphytes, herons, blue and yellow macaws and Huatzins. All the great Amazonian mammals are present: the lowland tapir, two species of deer, all the cats of the Amazon, including jaguars and pumas, peccaries, two species of dolphins, manatees, the giant otter, the monkeys are represented by 10 species , while rodents and bats are represented by dozens of species. The current number of registered bird species is under debate, some claiming 530 species, while others suggest that more than 580 species have been seen, but no one knows for sure because there is no official record. During the peak of the rainy season, thousands of hectares of forests are flooded, forming an El Dorado for an estimated 350 species of fish, two species of alligators, boas and anacondas, and countless frogs and toads sing their concerts endless. Dolphins have been seen swimming in flooded forests, as they follow the fish.
